All Season Greenhouse Sale

Snow VillageA greenhouse is a horticultural haven where life blooms all year round and warm light is always in abundance. They serve as an oasis for those passionate gardeners who refuse to stop just because Jack Frost says so. If this best describes yourself or someone you know I would like to give you an opportunity to ensure that you or someone close to you will have a backyard tropical getaway for many winters to come.

Until the end of December all orders placed for any model greenhouse come with all of the climate controls you need to utilize your greenhouse all year round at no extra charge. This includes shadeclothes, exhaust fans, and intake shutters for the summer and heaters for the winter. You will also get thermostats to control both the ventilation system and heater so you can easily maintain your desired temperatures no matter what the weather.

As winter sets in for most of the country many of our customers are already enjoying the benefits of a greenhouse that can withstand harsh weather and maintain an optimal growing environment without costing a small fortune. For more on this please view our previous posts discussing why Sunglo greenhouses are made for cold climates by clicking the links below.

Overwintering in the Greenhouse and Sunglo in Alaska

In some areas of the country it is still not yet cold enough to prevent you from having a greenhouse ready to go for this winter, and if you are already hibernating you can lock in this deal for spring by placing your order by the end of the year. We can have the greenhouse to you in as little a two weeks and if you have been searching for the perfect gift for the gardener on your list this year I assure you that greenhouse is pronounced “Best Gift Ever!” when given as a gift.

Greenhouse Grants for Schools

It can be difficult for schools to integrate horticulture into their curriculum. Of the numerous difficulties, cost is often the greatest obstacle. Another difficulty can be be space. Both are highly limited resources for schools and allocating them to horticultural instruction often means limiting other important parts of the curriculum. That is why I wanted to share some grant opportunities for schools that help make horticulture instruction possible.

If you are interested in applying for these grants one great site I found was http://grants.kidsgardening.org/. They list nearly every grant currently available and provide a multitude of helpful information about implementing a gardening program and completing grant applications.

In most areas of the country the winter season is almost as long as the school year and this makes gardening outdoors impractical if not impossible. Erecting a greenhouse provides a sheltered area specially designed for horticultural instruction. Over the years we have worked with many schools to custom fit their greenhouses to their specific needs and location. Our design allows for a high amount of customization without the cost of paying an architect and specialized contractor and our spacious lean-to models are especially attractive for schools that prefer the greenhouse be attached to the building. The insulated, energy efficient design also keeps operating costs down over the many years of use that a Sunglo provides and we offer highly discounted fully accessorized deals exclusively for schools as well.

Although horticulture as a career is becoming a less valid investment with time, sparking an interest in biological studies at a young age helps to insure that those individuals who have an affinity for such can be provided with the encouragement they need to begin shaping future career goals. It starts with planting seeds and learning about growth and development, and for some it leads to careers in genetics, aggro-ecology, and molecular biology.School greenhouse It is the inventive individuals in these horticulture related fields that are of utmost importance as the Earth’s population continues to rapidly increase and the food supply chain becomes further stressed. Personally, with some guidance toward a horticulture related career at an earlier age perhaps I could have saved myself two years of college education, and the debt that came with it, pursuing a career that would not have been a good fit for me. If you are an educator or a parent interested in starting or augmenting a gardening program at your local school please give us a call. We have helped many schools make their aspirations a reality over the years and we can put you in touch with educators whose students currently benefit from having one of our greenhouses at their school.

Orchid Photo Contest

PhaleonopsisI found out something exciting from one of our favorite customers over the years here at Sunglo. Just Add Ice Orchids is having a photo contest!

Barbara has purchased 2 greenhouses from us over the last twenty years to shelter the hundreds of orchids she has collected. Walking into her greenhouse is like taking a hike through a tropical rainforest with orchid blooms of all shapes and colors filling every inch of space.

I know many of our customers share Babara’s passion so I have provided a link to an NBC news article about the contest below. Your picture could win you a new Nikon D3100 camera.

Sunglo 1200C Greenhouse Construction

Inspired by Roy’s video post on Youtube, I set out to construct an entire Sunglo 1200C greenhouse in one day for demonstration at the Alaska State Fair last week. As you can see in the video below Roy is still the ultimate champion, but I came pretty close.

Alaska Demo Build on Youtube

All together it took about a day and a half. My thanks go out to Roy for not only the inspiration, but for all his helpful advice on how to shoot and edit the video as well.

Alaska Fair DemoToward the end of the video I included the construction of the cedar benches and vinyl shelving that are available in all our greenhouse models. Watching the assembly you can see why they support over 75 pounds per 30″ by 30″ slat. They are super tough, tie the greenhouse together very nicely, and smell like heaven. Another great feature of this particular demo is the double door. One door closes onto the other allowing for an unobstructed entry way of over five feet when both doors are open.

Sunglo goes AlaskaIf you have not dropped by to see us yet, you still have time to see this demo at the Alaska State Fair. I had a great time preparing for the fair and taking in the sights around the Matsu Valley. The natural beauty of Alaska and the people who live there will remain fresh in my mind until I finally get to return for next year’s fair.
